Julie and I very happy to announce the newest member of our family, MacKenzie Sandra Porter. MacKenzie was born Thursday September 30th at 1:20am eastern at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital in Ottawa. She weighed in at 6 lbs 12 ounces and is 19" tall. Both mom and baby are doing great and are resting comfortably at home after just a few hours in the hospital.
Jul had an ultrasound today and we're pleased to announce we'll be having a little girl this time around! Baby MacKenzie is doing great so far, already weighing in somewhere between 13 and 14 ounces - right on target:) She's due to arrive in this world sometime at the end of September, and we can't wait to meet her!!
Eight days and 3300 miles later, we arrived in Smiths Falls late Saturday afternoon. It was an enjoyable trip but we'll be happy not to drive for a while. Now it's time to settle back into life in Canada's capital region.
We made it to Columbus, Ohio tonight and plan to make it as far as Syracuse, New York tomorrow (last night we stopped in Columbia, Missouri). Today we drove in four different states -- Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. While the trip has been enjoyable, we're looking forward to not driving to hotels, eating at restaurants, packing and unpacking the car, stopping at gas stations and taking pregnancy pee breaks every five minutes :) Saturday, we'll be clearing customs and hope to arrive in Smiths Falls late Saturday afternoon.
We've blown as far as Hays, Kansas today which is roughly half the distance of our trip to Smiths Falls. We've been fighting very high winds for two full days now, from the mountainous regions of Utah and Colorado to the plains of Kansas. Last night, we ended up stopping in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, a nice little town nestled in a beautiful mountainous valley on the western slope of Colorado near Aspen. It was about two hours before Denver where we had planned to get to yesterday, but it turned out for the better. Last night, the Denver area had a tornado watch and one was reported south west of Denver. Tonight we heard on the news that there were a total of seven tornados throughout the area.
We really enjoyed driving through all the mountains and valleys of Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. We've taken plenty of pictures of all the nice scenery along the way. Kansas is pretty bland in comparison so far.
By the way, in case anyone was wondering, Curtis has been a superstar the whole trip. We couldn't ask for a better behaved boy. Without impeding progress, we've been making an effort to add some fun along the way. Doing things like stopping at an arcade, visiting a Dinosaur Museum and swimming at the hotel pools have all helped to make it more enjoyable for the big guy. Of course, it's also helped that we bought a portable DVD player so that Curtis can pass the time during the drive.
We're in Cedar City, Utah for the night. We didn't cover a lot of distance today but we knew we wouldn't since this is the leg of the trip we planned to spend the most time enjoying.
We started the day slowly, enjoying Mother's day brunch at the Luxor. We were planning to visit Grand Canyon national park afterwards but were disappointed to find out it was closed today. However, we drove through nearby Zion national park which was equally impressive I'm sure. Tomorrow, we're aiming to reach Denver.
Our first day on the road is over. We drove south through Monterey county one last time, then passed through Bakersfield and the Mojave desert until we reached Las Vegas. We checked into the Luxor Resort Hotel and Casino for the night. It's not the kind of place we plan on staying at for the rest of this trip, but we decided to splurge this one night since Jul hasn't experienced Vegas yet. We were pretty tired by the time we got settled into our room and had dinner so Jul decided to take it easy in the room with Curtis. I couldn't resist going downstairs and testing my luck at the slot machines. As usual, I ended up in the negative.
We're officially homeless. The movers finished moving out our things around 3:00pm. We finished packing the remaining things for our road trip back to Canada shortly afterwards. Saying goodbye to our home in Salinas, California was harder than I expected.
Seeing the house empty reminded me of the house when we first moved in and how happy we were to be there. Now just a year and a half later after moving to Salinas, our California dream is over. We spent a total of five and a half years in California between San Jose and Salinas and have so many greay memories of our time here. After locking up for the last time, we headed over to our neighbor's house across the street for a final visit with Becky. While there, we watched the new owner's come and take ownership of the house. It felt strange to see another family walk into our house and to see their children playing in the yard. While it was a little hard to watch, they are a really nice family and we wish them the best. Tonight we're staying at a Hotel in town. First thing tomorrow morning we hit the road. We're going to try and enjoy the trip as much as possible and see as much as we can. Our goal for tomorrow is to reach Las Vegas.
It's been long overdue, but I finally got around to relaunching the web site and I'm doing it by jumping onto the blog bandwagon. And for everyone who has been asking me over the past few months "When are you going to post some new pics of Curtis?", you'll find plenty of new Curtis pics and many others coming soon!
